Counting down to Masters of the Air!
By Haybag Maddie
Mr Gibbs and I have literally been counting down the days until the Masters of the Air series begins. In fact we’re so keen we’ve created a countdown for you too!
We are SO excited to see what USD$300 million buys in terms of authenticity, and I feel sorry for anyone having to watch it with us. We’re going to be such bores 🙂
So while we wait for next Friday, here’s a couple of little factoids for you.
Why is the series called Masters of the Air? Well, the series is based on the book “Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany”, by Donald L Miller. But the description actually comes from Winston Churchill. “For our air superiority, which by the end of 1944 was to become air supremacy, full tribute must be paid to the United States eighth air force. Now we were masters of the air.”
It was the ‘Mighty Eighth’ who started the tradition of the wonderful handpainted A2’s that I specialise in, but don’t be surprised if you don’t see so many in the series. Why? Because early on those A2s were issued to the airmen and were USAAF property – so you weren’t really allowed to scribble on them. It wasn’t until the USAAF stopped issuing them and aircrews began to purchase them personally that the handpainted jackets really took off – if you’ll excuse the pun.
There’s your factoids for today, and you can enjoy the trailer below. The countdown continues!
